Are Banks Open Today? Your Guide To Bank Holidays (2024) – Policygenius (2024)

While banks are open weekdays, Monday through Friday, they occasionally close for certain holidays, like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Labor Day. Banks are also open on Saturdays for limited hours, but they are usually closed on Sundays.

Credit unions, which are basically banks owned by their members, typically keep the same hours: Open on weekdays and Saturdays, but generally closed on Sundays. Most credit unions also close on the same holidays as banks.

This article is about branch locations and drive-through services at these locations. However, external ATMs should be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You’ll also be able to access your account information, and make electronic deposits or transfers, at any time, by logging into your bank or credit union’s online banking portal.

Bank hours

During the work week, banks most often open between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. and close between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. For the most part, credit unions also use these hours.

Banks and credit unions are usually open Saturdays. However, they may open later and close earlier on Saturdays. Typical Saturday opening hours for banks are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Almost no bank or credit union is open on Sundays, although there are rare exceptions. Banks that open on Sundays usually keep very limited hours, such as 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Note that these bank opening hours are examples, but there are thousands of branch locations across the country, and many keep different hours even among the same bank franchise.

To make sure your own bank or credit union is open, check their website. You should see a link called “Locations” or “Branches” that will allow you to search for open locations.

Bank holidays

A bank holiday is a day when bank branches are closed, also called a federal holiday or a public holiday. While some bank holidays are based on widely celebrated holidays like New Year’s Day and Christmas, others are set by federal legislation.

Per U.S. law, federal holidays are designated on specific days:

  • January 1st: New Year’s Day

  • Third Monday of January: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.)

  • Third Monday of February: President’s Day (Washington’s Birthday)

  • Last Monday of May: Memorial Day

  • July 4th: Independence Day

  • First Monday of September: Labor Day

  • Second Monday of October: Columbus Day (Indigenous People’s Day)

  • November 11th: Veterans Day

  • Fourth Thursday of November: Thanksgiving Day

  • December 25th: Christmas Day

When the holiday falls on a Sunday, banks typically close the following Monday. However, when the holiday falls on a Saturday, banks generally don’t close the Friday before.

In some rare cases, banks will be open on certain federal holidays, although their hours may be limited.

For non-federal holidays, like Good Friday, most banks will be open. But some states set their own public holidays, and banks and credit unions in those states may choose to close on those days. Depending on your state, the day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas may also be public holidays.
