I was only at Big Law for about 6 years, but I am fairly confident that in that time, I never met a client in person. Almost all business, including closings, was conducted by email, conference calls and even fax machines (remember those?). Even as a General Counsel, there have been many law firm partners and associates whom I worked with closely at all hours whom I never laid eyes on...until the Zoom era. Now I get to see the faces, the reactions, the body language, and other visual cues of the lawyers I work closely with, from partners to junior associates. I have to admit, the ability to see the other person on the other end of that phone number and/or email addresses changes a lot. I would like to think I am a good client who treats people well. However, it's easy to forget that there is a person on the other end of that email sent to you at 3 AM in the morning when you've never met them or ever see them. I give all this background to ask, Lawyers, now that you have the ability to build closer connections with your clients by visually interacting with them, why do so many of you not turn your cameras on? And this question is specific to lawyers because of all the partners I interact with from different industries and professions; lawyers are the least likely to have their cameras on during meetings. There are times when it's impractical for any of us to be on camera (early in the morning, kids in the space, etc.), but it seems to be a law firm cultural thing not to have cameras turned on. I only bring this up because I think back to my firm days and how challenging it was to connect with clients, and I think there is this big opportunity so many lawyers are not taking advantage of.
