Microsoft Teams is about to make remote work a lot less flexible for some employees. Imagine this: you've been enjoying the freedom of working from home, but soon your every move could be tracked. Your boss might know when you're not at your desk!
A new feature, currently in development, will enable managers to see if their employees are connected to the company's Wi-Fi network. Microsoft Teams will automatically update a user's work location to the office building when they connect. So, if you're not there, your absence will be noticed. But here's where it gets controversial: is this an invasion of privacy or a necessary tool for management?
This feature is set to launch in December for Windows and macOS. It will be turned off by default, but administrators can choose to enable it and require employees to opt-in. With more companies demanding a return to the office, this tool could be a manager's dream or an employee's nightmare.
Microsoft, for instance, has requested employees return to the office three days a week if they live within a 50-mile radius. And Teams has been keeping up with the times, recently introducing Slack-like threaded replies for better organization and security features to protect users from malicious links and files.
