How long of a trailer do you need for a 24 pontoon? ›

A trailer for a 24' should be 27'-28' length overall. In the photo to the left, the bunk could perhaps be a few inches longer, but with the weight in the back it's immaterial. Different manufacturers use various lengths of carpeted boards to support pontoons.

Galvanizing will dull over time and may not be as visually appealing as painted or aluminum trailers. Galvanized trailers are a higher cost option than painted, but will always tend to last longer under normal conditions. Aluminum trailers are suited for salt water use as they offer extreme corrosion resistance.

In order to accommodate the third tube, a bunk-type trailer will be required. Scissor trailers, due to their design, cannot haul triple pontoon models. As such, a bunk-style trailer would likely be the ideal choice for a tritoon owner.

By coating the metal surfaces in zinc, your trailer becomes far-more resistant to oxidation and rust. The galvanizing process is very effective at preventing metal corrosion, but some basic care and maintenance is required if you would like your trailer to last for many years.

If you are shopping in the 21-24 foot pontoon range and plan on carrying 8-10 passengers, a 150-175hp engine with a triple pontoon is a great all-around pontoon boat choice.

However, instead of having two large aluminum tubes beneath the deck, a tritoon has a third tube in the center that distributes weight more evenly over the water. This added stability and structure also means the boat can handle more horsepower than a typical twin tube pontoon boat.

If you're transporting your tritoon boat to and from the water with a trailer, you'll definitely want to support the center pontoon while it's in transit. For boats that will be sitting still on a lift at the water's edge, however, that kind of support isn't necessarily required.

Do I need a special tritoon lift? You don't necessarily need a totally new lift to support the center toon. If you're using a trailer to transport your boat, you'll probably want to support the center one. However, your boat will be sitting still on a lift and won't need support like it would in transit.

Once the process of rusting, corrosion and other damage starts, the structural integrity of your trailer is in question. A galvanised trailer might cost more upfront, but it will last, with the right care, over 20 years.

How to protect a galvanized trailer from saltwater? ›

The rest of the trailer, especially nuts, bolts and other fasteners, should be sprayed regularly with a moisture-displacing lubricant such as WD-40 or CorrosionX. I buy WD-40 in a gallon can at Home Depot for about $15, and I use a hand spray bottle that I bought there to dispense the WD-40.

The zinc coating of hot-dipped galvanized steel will last in the harshest soil is 35 to 50 years and in less corrosive soil 75 years or more. Although humidity affects corrosion, temperature itself has less of an impact. Galvanized zinc coatings respond well in extreme cold and hot temperatures.
