In a bid to alleviate this issue, SP Electricity North West, the company overseeing the work, has proposed implementing manual control of these traffic lights during peak hours.
According to the permit for the ongoing projects, between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM every day, trained staff will be on-site specifically to manage traffic signals at the busy A59 and A565 junction near Tarleton in West Lancashire. Their aim is clear: to streamline traffic flow and reduce the congestion that has plagued drivers since construction began.
Many commuters have expressed their frustrations, noting noticeable delays in the area. For instance, motorists traveling from Liverpool Road towards Preston reported taking about 20 minutes to navigate this intersection on Thursday afternoon. Furthermore, it was not uncommon to see traffic stretching back towards Rufford, with delays also being reported on Southport Old Road. While some may argue that roadworks are a necessary nuisance to upgrade infrastructure, this situation has sparked a conversation about how effectively these disruptions are managed.
A spokesperson for SP Electricity North West explained that the company is currently installing approximately two miles (or 3 kilometers) of underground electricity cabling. This work is crucial for enhancing the long-term reliability of the local power grid, but as any city planner will tell you, balancing the need for progress with the daily lives of residents is often challenging.
"We recognize that construction work can be quite disruptive to traffic, and to lessen the impact, we have traffic management personnel onsite to handle the lights from 7 AM until 7 PM, seven days a week," the spokesperson said. They further emphasized that all planned work had been previously communicated to the public through advance notifications, including letters and signage.
